A house steeped in understated luxury

Dar Hanane is a stylish, well presented riad housing four double rooms and two suites, in an interesting residential neighbourhood just south of the bustling Place du Moqf. One of the Pure Riads group (along with Riad Adore), its rooms and public areas are all immaculately conceived, with a knowing balance of Moroccan design flair and nicely upholstered western comfort. The house is designed as a home-from-home, and the young, affluent English-speaking crowd it attracts enjoys its blend of sober, understated north African style, luxury furnishings and all mod cons.

“iPod docking stations, free Wi-Fi and an honesty bar all contribute to the open, friendly attitude at Dar Hanane, near the Medersa Ben Youssef. There’s 1 suite and 4 rooms, all elegantly stylish but at the same time homely and unfussy. A superb terrace view tops the place off. If it’s full the owners have 2 more riads in the city, Riad Tzarra and Riad Bel Haj.”

The loft living room features an honesty bar where you track your Bonassia Cabernet intake (ahem). Chef Aisha’s flair for French and Moroccan specialties makes restaurant trips unnecessary, but English-speaking staff organizes excursions for the restless.

“With its white walls and grey-blue doors and shutters, this fine guest house has been tastefully renovated. The tree filled patio is calm and peaceful, like the plain but carefully decorated rooms. The house has a “Douiria” (a separate area for the master of the house) now converted into a suite. A superb view over the Atlas from the terrace roof.”

“Blanc pour les murs et gris bleu pour les portes et volets sont les couleurs toutes simples de cette belle maison d’hôtes rénovée avec gout. Le patio arboré incite à la rêverie, tout comme les chambres, sobres, mais décorée avec soin. Superbe vue sur l’Atlas depuis la terrasse.”

“So much simple beauty. So much space in these unusually wide, high rooms done with love, respect and absolutely no frills. From the crowded streets with their little market and nearby tanneries, stop at the majestic door and prepare to fall in love. The monastic walls, deep-lobed doorways and blue-grey carved woodwork round the perfect little patio say it all: in such peace and grandeur, you can be yourself. The pale background is enlivened by touches of red, pink and mauve and there are some lovely Berber rugs. Gentle bedrooms have one fine piece of furniture each, a carefully-chosen lamp, a walk-in cupboard and a pastel tadelakt bathroom; the wonderful suite extends to a latticed mezzanine; the gorgeous terrace, with its canvas tent draped stylishly over your cushions, is one of the highest in Marrakech. Soft, gentle taste is the hallmark of this house and of the delightful assistants Raja and Nadia.”
